Volunteer Here for River Herring Monitoring Program

If you are interested in monitoring any of the herring runs throughout the state of Rhode Island,
you can start by checking in at this blog. Please leave your name and e-mail address/phone number.
Volunteers would monitor runs and report the number of fish passing through fishways and ladders.
Data collected would be passed on and shared with such organizations as the Buckeye Brook Coalition,
Save The Bay, RIDEM..etc..etc.

Please inquire soon. The River Herring will start showing up in the Narragansett Bay watershed by mid- April.

WELCOME TO THE RHODE ISLAND RIVER HERRING REPORT.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has imposed a moratorium on sale, possession
or harvest of river herring. With this closing, Rhode Island joins both Massachusetts and Connecticut in recognizing the drastic reduction in the river herring population of watersheds throughout New England.
This closing has the support of several oragnizations. The official hearing held at the University of Rhode Island's Bay Campus on March 13th drew many supporters of the ban. The Buckeye Brook Coalition, The
Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association and Save The Bay all spoke in support of the moratorium.
The closure on this fishery could not have come at a more critical time. Fish runs throughout the state of Rhode Island have experienced a 95% reduction in returning spawners over the past 5 years.
